When Virender Sehwag scored a double tonne in that same game, he became the second Indian to do so. By contributing fifty runs each, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina helped India reach an incredible 418/5.
As spinners Rahul Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets apiece, West Indies could only muster 265 runs in reply. In addition to winning the series, India won the match by an overwhelming 153 runs. Player of the Match went to Virender Sehwag, who was rightfully chosen.
414/7 vs. Sri Lanka (Rajkot, 15th December 2009):
It was the highest total India had ever achieved in ODIs till they revised it after two years. This is actually one of the highest-scoring thrillers in ODI cricket history. They were forced to second-guess their choice as the Indian batsmen destroyed the Lankan bowlers.
With scores of 146 from Sehwag, 72 from MS Dhoni, and even 69 from a stroke-filled knock by Sachin Tendulkar, India amassed a formidable 414/7. Jadeja and Kohli’s late cameos at 30* and 27 respectively are also worthy of note.
Though it appeared that Sri Lanka had lost the match, Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara, and Tilakaratne Dilshan had other ideas. Dilshan scored 160 of the 316 runs the trio scored collectively. Nevertheless, India was able to keep Sri Lanka to three runs below their total thanks to some excellent bowling towards the end.
